by Okada Atsushi

Since 2011, Okada has been filming wild horses inhabiting Yururi Island off the Nemuro Peninsula in Hokkaido, Japan.

The scene is set in a meadow with horses like an impressionist painting, and the voice of the sea breeze plays a delicate melody akin to a wind instrument. That is all left of the abandoned island of Yururi. Or, if I dare to add to that, perhaps it is the traces of the islanders’ memories. These things are quietly overlapping each other, and thus time is flowing on Yururi, a lost island like no other. The images, music, and several sonnets (14 lines of poetry) here represent this unique time flow. Now, let’s go to the water path leading to the lost island. Light, wind, and the silent voice guide you.
