Waves Wash Over the Lost Island


Reefs lurk around the island.
A quiet old fisherman who lived on the island said this
as if he was revealing an important secret
in a house built on a small hill facing the island.

Horses sometimes crashed off the cliffs into the sea around the island….
The fisherman’s recollections continue as he watches the island’s shadow reflected in the window.
Fishing boats witnessed the moment of the fall, rescued the horse from the waves,
and brought it back to the island.

Those who left the island, and the horses still there,
are gradually decreasing in number.
Memories fade away like letters washed by the waves.

“Oh, I see the horses….”
The fisherman shouted and pointed to the top of the island protected by the reef,
but I could not find the horse no matter how hard I looked.
